Join a gaggle of BATS’ world-class coaches for an in-depth dive into the wonders of improvisation! This four-day intensive is appropriate for improvisers with a range of improv experience – complete beginners to experienced improvisers are welcome and will find a comfortable level at which to study.
All students will begin with a movement class designed to get your blood moving and prepare you to be inspired and work together the rest of the day. Next, students will go through classes focusing on the basics of BATS-style improvisation, finding its roots in story-telling, spontaneity, strong environments, listening, co-creation, and Yes, And.
Classes will cover basic building blocks of scenes (The Essentials), transporting audiences to new, imagined worlds (The Magic) and portraying convincing characters and stories (The Truth). On the last day, students will have a choice of electives in the morning and afternoon. Options include Improvised Singing, Stage Combat, Masks, and Games.
At lunchtimes, BATS Company members will lead lunchtime learning cafes to explore various elements of improv. Past topics have included: “Improv in Life”, “Forming your own Troupe”, and “Everything you’ve always wanted to know about improv but were afraid to ask”.
Students will be broken into two tracks according to their experience level – beginning/intermediate and intermediate/advanced and classes will be tailored to the students’ needs. And snacks will be provided throughout the day to keep you going!
Coaches in the four-day improv intensive are: Zoe Galvez, Rafe Chase, Lisa Rowland, Rebecca Stockley, Chris Sams, Laura Derry, Gerri Lawlor, Kasey Klemm, Dave Dennison, Barbara Scott, Joshua Raoul Brody, John Remak, Diane Rachel and William Hall.
• I learned a lot about myself while having a great time. • I really like all the positive energy! • Improv is not just for the clever, the talented, and the ‘experienced' people. Improv is for everyone, and BATS makes it so. • Drunken revelry without the booze. • Fears were addressed and kicked to the curb. • The theory is taught through doing. • It's been so freeing being here. Thank you! • This was my fourth time at Improv Intensive and it won't be my last.
*Pay for two four-day summer intensives and get $50 off your second intensive (only valid after June 1)
Quotes from previous participants:
• Getting deeper into the improv experience filled my artist soul.
• It's great even if you've never acted before in your life.
